IT’’s large-heartedness shown by Pakistan Cricket Board by inducting fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar in the 30-men squad for the upcoming Champion’s Trophy in September, as the move will better serve the interest of the game. Though somewhat errant, Shoaib is a very popular and fantastic player. His presence on the field will enhance the charm of the game.
It is not the case that Shoaib Akhtar has been picked up only after dropping another pacer Mohammad Asif who failed the drug test. Shoaib Akhtar, 32, who has contributed in many Pakistan wins, deserves a place by dint of his mere talent and bowling prowess. The PCB should be generous to the players. After suspending 18-months ban on him, the PCB now should waive the Rs 7 million fine on him. It could be possible for Shoaib to pay the fine, but why to impose such a hefty fine? It will be like Shoaib paid the board to get back selection in the team. Let’s hope his selection bear fruit for Pakistan cricket.
