Kashmir University lacks modern internet facilities
Gazala HassanIn this technological era, students of Kashmir University still have to face the brunt of poor infrastructure. The internet facility provided by the University in the Allama Iqbal library is termed as 'very poor' by students.
"The number of computers available for the internet access in the library is far less and those very few in number is outdated with pathetic performance," said Shaid A.Ronga, a student from the department of law.
Students are annoyed with the poor performance of the set up as they cannot utilize their allotted time of one hour per day for internet access. A group of internet savvy students laments,
“The computer systems, usually donot function properly. Sometimes these outdated systems hang for prolonged times and thus we are unable to fulfill our requirements as also many online publications have not been subscribed by the university,’’
Besides being ‘A’ grade university’’ students are not provided with upgraded computer systems. Students not only appear disappointed with the lack of infrastructure in terms of computers, speed, time allotted, but also with the insufficient space provided for the internet access.
"It is disheartening for the students as the facilities provided to them are insufficient as compared to the various other universities outside the valley. The space is very suffocating and I fail to understand why not Air conditioning (AC) works in these congested cabins carrying handful of computers in their bad condition," added Arshee Khan, a student of Psychology.
At present there are about 22 computers available for the students in the internet access section of the Library among which 2 are not in the working condition. Even the Facilitator employees are not happy with the set up.
"From the past two months we have been continuously informing the authorities to get the new nodes (computer) for the students, but till now nothing substantial has been achieved," said a concerned Library official requesting for anonymity.
“The AC which was functional for few days does not work now due the lack of required stabilizer," added the official.
Whereas commenting on the grievance of limited subscription to the online journals Assistant Librarian Periodicals, M.S Matoo clarified,"It is not the university but the University Grants Commission (UGC) under UGC info net digital scheme who subscribe to various publishers and databases. If the university has to subscribe on its own it will require huge amounts. "
At present the speed remains to be about 1000Mbps (Mega bits per second), but due to the outdated nodes installed the internet speed suffers and leaves the students in a total dismay.
"The former Vice chancellor Prof Abdul Wahid Qureshi had promised us that hostels would be provided with the internet facility, as WiFi has been installed in the campus, but again till date it did not materialize. I request the university authorities to keep pace with the fast growing technology," expressed Mir Mudasir, a student of Law.
